The Office of the Textile Commissioner was established in 1943 during the Second World War period for arranging the supply of cloth to the defence forces as well as civilian population. After the war, the role transitioned into a regulatory authority, overseeing prices, distribution, and control of essential textiles in a scarcity-stricken economy.
Over the decades, this office has evolved into a developmental and promotional body for the textile sector, driving modernization and inclusive growth across India’s diverse and broad-based textile industry. It plays a crucial role in formulating and implementing government schemes in a transparent, industry-friendly manner.
Its strength lies in a technically sound and economically experienced team of professionals, backed by an extensive outreach network through 9 Regional Offices and 15 Power-loom Service Centres strategically located in key textile clusters.
These regional offices, in close coordination with the head office, provide dedicated technical assistance to the decentralised textile sector, empowering them to remain competitive and resilient in a globalised marketplace.
With a proactive and collaborative approach, the Office of the Textile Commissioner continues to facilitate the transformation of India’s textile sector into a Sunshine Industry.
