Surat Zari Craft (GI No. 171)

The shining "Surat zari thread and zari embroidery material are considered unique in the world. The silver electroplating used in the process of production, materials used, type of indigenous machinery adopted and skill of the artisans brings unique quality in the product. It is believed that zari making started in  this textile city of county way back in  19th century. Initially, the artisans  used pure metals such as gold, silver, etc. called "true zari" (locally called pasa). The process involved the covering of silver with a coating of gold and then drawing fine wires of different gauges, termed locally as badla, which was then hand woven over base yarn of pure silk to make the zari. Subsequent to the Second World War period, owing to the price of gold, imitation zari was introduced with plastic as base metal in addition to real zari. The raw materials used for the production of zari are bars of copper, gold, silver, pure silk, art silk, polyester, viscous and cotton threads of different counts and different types of colours.
