Nagpur Saree

The traditional Nagpur Sarees are belonging to the category of ‘Nauvari Sarees’ due to its length and style of draping, which are inspired from the warrior Marathi women. TheLugade or Nauvari sadi (nine-yard saree) is the traditional attire of the women of Maharashtra which is worn along with a short-sleeved Choli or Polka. Nagpur Sarees are now available in both the lengths, 9-yards and 6-yards. The specialty of the Saree is that it is made up of finer cotton yarn with silk/art silk border using extra  weft for designs.  Another uniqueness of the Nagpur sarees is the designs and motifs that are woven with the Nagpur wooden dobby. The designs are exquisite and are usually geometrical like triangle, square and circle. The designs are woven in stripes and checks with fly shuttles, complimenting the finely textured body with richly attractive borders. On border they create buties in the shape of lines and dots. The popular designs that are woven in the border and pallu are locally called "Kattari, Kannath, Lehari, Tikari and Bugadi Temple". The weavers use a unique technique by which each end is separately controlled by hand to interlace with the weft, wound in small pirn known as lace weaving. The specialty of the lace weaving is that identical appearance of designs on the face and backside of the fabric is obtained by this technique of weaving. The designs with art silk or coloured yarn, using the age-old technique still has an unparallel appeal which can attract even the most sophisticated customers
